Course Descriptions:
English 10 (1 credit):
Students in this literature-based course will learn and refine reading, writing, speaking and visual literacy skills. Language study and composition will be based primarily upon assigned literature.

English 11 (1 credit):
In this course emphasis is placed on the development of grammar and usage skills and students will have weekly assignments in writing. An overview of American writers will be studied with an emphasis on American novels.

English 12 - Choice of two semester courses (1 credit):
Students are able to select two semester elective courses to earn their English 12 credit. These courses continue to develop and enhance reading and writing skills. Students learn the elements of both composition and literature. Instruction in composition includes grammar and usage, sentence structure, the paragraph, the theme, and research elements. Elements of literature and literary techniques are emphasized.

Course Descriptions:
Algebra I (1 credit):
Algebra I is designed for a variety of instructional modes. The student will experience computer instruction, large and small group discussions, and independent study. The curriculum includes real number operations, linear equations and inequalities, graphing, linear systems, polynomials, factoring and rational expressions.

Geometry (1 credit):
Geometry is designed to provide a semi-formal approach to Plane Euclidean Geometry. The curriculum includes computer instruction, hands-on-activities, flow proofs and semi-formal two column proofs. Logical thinking is stressed using the following topics to achieve that goal: area, angle relationships, right triangle trigonometry, parallel and perpendicular lines, similar and congruent figures, and the geometry of circles. Pre-requisite: C or better in Algebra I.

Algebra II (1 credit):
Algebra II is designed for a variety of instructional modes. The student will experience computer instruction, large and small group discussions, and independent study. The curriculum will include review topics from Algebra and Geometry, rational expressions, rational exponents and radicals, quadratic equations, functions and graphing, exponential and logarithmic functions, and non-linear equations and inequalities. Pre-requisite: C or better in Geometry.

Pre-Calculus (1 credit ):
Pre-calculus is a course which allows students to explore elements of trigonometry, functions, series and sequences as well as topics from algebra and geometry. The TI-83+ graphing calculator is an integral part of this course. topics include properties of functions including end behavior and limits, logarithms, properties of conic sections, polar coordinates, complex numbers, vectors, and parametric equations. Pre-requisite: Algebra II.

Statistics (1 credit ):
This semester course is a hands-on experience in data collection, organization and report writing. Each student will do a mini-research paper at the end of the course. Topics include nature of probability, frequency distributions, data description, counting techniques, probability, confidence intervals and sample size, and hypothesis testing. TI-83+ calculators are used extensively. Pre-requisite: Algebra II.

Anatomy and Physiology (1 credit):
This course covers the structure and function of the major systems of multi-cellular organisms. Study emphasizes the systems of the human body with comparisons to the systems of other multi-cellular animals.

Biology (1 credit):
Biology provides students with an understanding of the fundamental concepts and processes of life. A sampling of biological topics would include: cells, genetics, human biology, botany, diversity of life, and natural selection.

Chemistry (1 credit):
This course relates to the basic concepts of the composition of matter at an atomic and molecular level. Each unit focuses on chemical concepts as they relate to a socio-technological problem in some type of community.

Environmental Science (1 credit):
This is the study of the theory, mechanics and interrelations of the factors that surround and influence all organisms. Included are sciences dealing with the atmosphere, the Earth, humans, plants, and animals that inhabit the planet. Also included are natural resources management, air, soil, water, geological formations, etc.
Principles of Technology (1 credit):
This is a course in applied physics for students who plan to pursue careers a technicians or keep pace with the advances in modern technology. It is a course that blends an understanding of basics and principles with practice. Principles of Technology is devoted to the study of ideas that technology is built upon. Students will learn the concepts of force, work, rate, resistance, energy and power. Units explain how these concepts relate to one another in mechanical, fluid, electrical and thermal systems.

American History (1 credit):
Students will study 20th Century U.S. History with an emphasis on 1900 to the Vietnam War. Topics include: industrialization, immigration, urbanization, politics, foreign policy, economics, social and cultural development.

This course emphasizes how, throughout history, humans have confronted similar obstacles and goals and have strived to better themselves and the world around them, regardless of their geographical location/cultural background.

U.S. Government (1/2 credit):
The course examines and defines the history, traditions, powers and functions of our government. Emphasis is on City, State and Federal government. Students also study parties, elections and other forms of world government.

Economics is the study of the economic system of the United States. Students will use economic reasoning skills and knowledge of major economic concepts, issues and systems in order to make informed choices as producers, consumers, savers, investors, workers and citizens in an interdependent world.

This semester course covers a general view of psychology with an emphasis upon human behavior. Areas of special concern include human development, memory, learning, personality development, mental illness and emotions.
